Nobivac Myxo-RHD Plus is a new vaccine developed to reduce death in rabbits, as well as clinical signs of myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD).
Myxomatosis is caused by the myxoma virus and is spread between rabbits in close contact with one another, as well as by biting insects such as fleas and mosquitoes. The virus causes swelling and discharge from the eyes, nose and bottom and has a very poor prognosis, with most rabbits dying within 10 – 14 days.
RHD, caused by the RHD virus (RHDV1) and RHD type 2 virus (RHDV2), leads to blood clots in major organs such as the heart and lungs. This subequently leads to heart and respiratory failure when the heart and lungs stop working. Nobivac Myxo-RHD Plus contains live myxoma vectored RHD virus strains 009 and MK1899.
Rabbits used to have two injections per year in order to protect against Myxo/RHDV1 and RHDV2. This new vaccine contains everything combined in one vial, so rabbits would only require once yearly vaccines if Nobivac Myxo-RHD Plus is used.
The vaccine is not currently on the market but is set to be relased soon. Speak to your vet about supplies.
